The Swarthmore Theater Department is delighted to announce that Jude Sandy will be joining our faculty on a permanent basis. After a rigorous national search, Professor Sandy has been chosen as our new tenure-track Assistant Professor of Acting. Many Swarthmore students already know and love Professor Sandy after his triumphant year as a Visiting Assistant Professor, in which he taught acting classes and directed our Honors Acting students in a luminous production of Bryna Turner's At The Wedding

Jude Sandy (he/him) is a Trinidad & Tobago-born, Philadelphia-based director, teacher and performer. Since 2016 he has been an artistic company member with Trinity Repertory Company in Providence, RI, where he has directed lauded productions of August Wilson’s Gem Of The Ocean and Radio Golf, and Marcus Gardley’s black odyssey. At Trinity Rep, he has also choreographed for six productions and appeared in twelve, playing Othello in Othello, Seymour in Little Shop of Horrors, and Scrooge in A Christmas Carol. On Broadway, he performed for two years as an original company member of the Tony Award-winning Lincoln Center Theater production of War Horse, and has appeared Off Broadway at The Signature Theater, The Pearl Theater, Barrow Street Theater, HERE Arts and others.

Since 2016, Sandy has been a co-creator for Denizen Arts Project, an African diaspora- and queer-informed performance collaboration alongside dance and performance artist Dr. yaTande Whitney V. Hunter. He is Associate Director with Middlebury College’s Beyond The Page program, and is currently working on his first commission as a playwright for Trinity Rep. For a full bio, see his website

Professor Sandy is thrilled to be a part of our community, explaining that “Every day at Swarthmore, I find myself inspired, provoked, and illuminated by my students and fellow educators in our shared examination of what it means to cultivate courageous citizenship - whatever our field of endeavor – and what it means to be vigorous in our learning and creating, to engage and even embrace one another right at the heart of our differences. That pursuit is fervent here in ways unlike anywhere else I’ve experienced, and it’s especially true of my colleagues and students in the Theater Department. And that pursuit we forge here together is not always comfortable, but I find it profoundly enriching. I’m very excited to be here!”

Please join us in congratulating Assistant Professor Jude Sandy!
